Bookmarks 2003-06
These works depict tabs of paper that were found flagging the pages of random library books. Left behind by anonymous library users and then removed from the books in which they were found, the bookmarks reveal traces of human identity through characteristic creases, torn edges, sections of handwriting and distinctive types of stationery. These qualities were faithfully and painstakingly recorded as though some kind of scientific specimen or precious relic were being documented, and arranged in compositions reminiscent of a museum exhibit. The original significance of each paper fragment is lost, however, their carefully scrutinised presence in these paintings and drawings amplifies private and ordinary human moments.
